What is physiotherapy

Physiotherapy (or physio as it is more commonly called) is a profession which is aimed at the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body after disease or injury. Physiotherapists are university trained health care professionals who are registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. All physiotherapists at Accent Physio are members of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and are also registered with all private health funds, HICAPS, Medicare and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Physiotherapy aims to produce an evidence-based approach to assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries or dysfunction. Physiotherapy is most commonly used in isolation as the therapy of choice to assist in injury management but is also often used in conjunction with other health care services. In the cases where physio is used in combination with other medical / allied health therapies it may help provide longer lasting relief or a speedier recovery from injury.

Treatment at Accent Physiotherapy

Accent Physio physiotherapists are highly trained to assess and diagnose your condition, then plan and administer treatment programs to restore function to the highest possible level. At Accent Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Services we place a strong emphasis on the continuity of treatment from initial injury to full recovery. Our physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and massage therapists are committed to providing individualised treatment and rehabilitation programs of the highest level, so that we can get you back in action and performing at your optimum level as soon as possible. As a physiotherapy practice providing comprehensive care, Accent Physio focuses on your ability to be healthy.  Our goals are: firstly, to address the issues that brought you to this practice; secondly, to treat the cause of your condition (not just treat the symptoms or place a temporary patch over your condition); and thirdly, to offer you the opportunity of improved health potential and wellness services in the future. This approach reduces the likelihood of the same thing happening again in the future and also reduces any worsening of the condition or any more degeneration / dysfunction of the condition. Your physio treatment will therefore vary depending on what your presenting condition is, but commonly patients can expect to receive treatment techniques from the following list:

  • Joint mobilisation therapy
  • Spinal mobilisation therapy
  • Manipulation
  • Massage
  • Postural advice / education
  • Exercise programs / advice
  • Stretches and cores stability training
  • Ergonomic and work station assessments and advice
  • Pilates conditioning programs
  • Acupuncture and dry needling
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • Balance training and re-education
  • Gait (walking / running) retraining
  • Strength and rehabilitation programs and training

An accurate assessment by you Accent Physio physiotherapist will determine what the most appropriate course of treatment is to suit you as an individual to get the best recovery possible so that you can get back to doing what you enjoy most!
